Animal Identification - New - Male

This program allows you to initialize a new record for a male/bull in your herd that are currently not saved in VAMPP.

1. Go to Entries, Identification. On the right hand side of the screen where it says SEX OF ANIMAL, with your mouse click on MALE. The box below will now appear in BLUE.

2. Fill in the male number

  • Male number must not be in use at the present time by another male in your herd.
  • Press the New id button to have the first available male ID number that has NEVER been assigned to another male. You may change this number if desired.
  • Press the Reuse id button to have a list of male numbers that are available to be re-used, the number was used by a male that is now culled.   
  • Press the back or forward button (4th and 5th icon from the left hand side) to retrieve a previously identified male record. 
  • Number may consist of a maximum of 10 digits. More than 4 digits may distort the format of some reports.
  • PLEASE NOTE: once a number has been assigned to a male/bull and the information has been saved, you will be unable to edit this number.

3. Male name

  • Name may consist of letters, digits or letters and digits. 
  • Must be unique (male names can not be re-used regardless if the name has been used for a male that is now culled or no longer being used to service female animals).
  • If the name consist only of digits, it must be the equivalent to the male's number or MORE than 4 digits long.
  • If the name exceeds 12 digits, the end of the name will appear with ... (periods will appear instead of the letters). 

4. On the lower, left hand side of the screen is where more specific ID details are entered

  • Fill in Yes or No if the male is used as a AI Sire (this is a required field). 
  • Enter the animal's birthdate (this is a required field), click on ESTIMATED with your mouse if the date may not be 100% correct. 
  • Enter the male's Sire (this is an optional field). If the sire is not in your herd data and you wish to have this information available, create a record for SIRE prior to creating this record or press the F5 key for quick identification of the sire.
  • Enter the male's Dam (this is an optional field). If the male has been purchased (including AI bulls), the dam information will not be available.  If you wish to have this information, you must first create a record for the DAM. (Please refer to the FAQ page titled "Animal ID - New - Female").
  • Fill in Recipient (optional data)
  • Fill in Family Line (optional data)
  • If herd grouping is activated in your herd (refer to FAQ page titled Activate Herd Grouping), fill in the appropriate Herd Group for the male/bull animal.

5. Registration Information:

  • Registration name (Optional data): enter the unique registered name. (If the animal has been registered with an association, be sure that the registered name matches their records).
  • Registration number (Optional data): Enter the unique registration number. (If the animal has been registered with an association, be sure that the registered number matches their records). The registration number may contain up to 13 characters and may consist of digits or letters and digits. (For example: CANM12345678 or CANM1234567A).
  • Sire Code (optional data): Enter the unique sire code. (If the animal has been registered with an association, be sure that the sire code matches their records). (Sire code example: 0039HO00750).
  • Fill in the Secondary ID if necessary.
  • Fill in the Alternate ID if necessary.
  • Fill in the NLID # if necessary.

6. General Information (you can access this by clicking with your mouse on the TAB labeled General):

  • This is where you will fill in the breed, color, purity leve. %age purebred, if they have been blood typed, the animal's birth status and if they have been tested for leucosis and the results of their test. PLEASE NOTE: breed, color and purity level are required IF you wish to register the animal with an association. 

7. Purchase Information (you can access this by clicking with your mouse on the TAB labeled Purchase):

  • If the animal was purchased, this is where you will fill in the specifics of the purchase. Enter the purchase date, reason, price, comment (if necessary), seller, address, location, weight and height
  • Weight and height can be entered for animals, regardless if they were purchased.

8. Once all the above information has been entered, you can now save the data that has been entered by clicking either the save icon (2nd icon from the left hand side) or by pressing F9 on your keyboard. 

NOTE: For download of genetic indexes, the registration numbers of all Canadian males (including those numbers beginning with 3 and 4) must begin with CANM).
