Animal Identification - New - Female

This program allows you to initialize a new record for female animals (cows/heifers) in your herd that are currently not saved in VAMPP.

1. Go to Entries, Identification.

2. Fill in the animal number (this is a required field):

  • Animal number must not be in use at the present time by another animal in your herd.
  • Press the Newid button to have the first available animal ID that has NEVER been assigned to another animal. You may change this number if needed. 
  • Press the Reuse ID button to have a list of animal numbers that are available to be re-used, the number was used by a animal that is now culled.
  • Press the Back or Forward button (4th and 5th icon from the left hand side) to retrieve a previously identified animal record.
  • Number may consist of a maximum of 10 digits. More than 4 digits may distort the format of some reports.
  • Young stock number can be changed under option, Entries: Animal Records: ID change. Animals in a lactation number greater than zero may not have their number changed.

3. Animal name  - Name may consist of letters, digits or letters and digits.

  • Must be unique (animals names can not be re-used regardless if name has been used on a animal that is now culled). 
  • If the name consist only of digits, it must be the equivalent to the cow's number or MORE than 4 digits long.
  • If the name exceeds 12 digits, the end of the name will appear with ... (periods will appear instead of the letters).

4. On the lower, left hand side of the screen is where more specific ID details are entered.

  • Fill in the Lactation # (this is a required field). Please note: If you wish to add a calving date after the animal's record has been entered, the number that is entered here will increase by 1 when the calving date is saved.
  • Fill in the animal's birthdate (this is a required field), click on Estimated with your mouse if the date may not be 100% correct.
  • Enter the animal's sire (this is an optional field). If the sire is not in your herd data, please refer to the FAQ page listed as Animal ID - NEW - MALE to add the sire information. You can also the F5 key for quick identification of a new sire.
  • Enter the animal's dam (this is an optional field). If the animal has been purchased, the dam information will not be available.

  • If you have use herd grouping (refer to FAQ titled Activate Herd Grouping), you can place this animal in the desire group by filing in the Herd Group (this is an optional field).

5. Registration Information:

  • Registered name (Optional data): enter the unique registered name. (If the animal has been registered with an association, be sure that the name matches their records). 
  • Registration number (Optional data): Enter the unique registration number. (If the animal has been registered with an association, be sure that the registration number matches their records). The registration number may contain up to 13 characters and may consist of digits or letters and digits. (For example: CANF12345678 or CANF1234567A).
  • Fill in the DHI # if known.
  • Fill in the Secondary ID number if necessary. This field can be used for the EZE-IR number provided to you from Holstein Canada with the dual tag identification system.
  • Fill in the Alternate ID number if necessary.
  • Fill in the NLID # if necessary.

6. General Information (you can access this by clicking with your mouse on the TAB labeled General):

  • This is where you will fill in the Breed, Color, Purity Level, %Age Purebred, if they have been Blood typed, the animal's Birth Status and if they have been tested for Leucosis and the results of their test. Please note: breed, color and purity level are required IF you wish to register the animal with an association.

7. Purchase Information (you can access this by clicking with your mouse on the Tab labeled Purchase):

  • If the animal was purchased, this is where you will fill in the specifics of the purchase. Enter the Purchase date, reason, price, comment (if necessary), Seller, address, location, weight and height.
  • Weight and height can be entered for animals, regardless if they were purchased.

8. Once all the above information has been entered, you can now save the data that has been entered by clicking either the save icon (2nd icon from the left hand side) or by pressing F9 on your keyboard.

Note: For download of genetic indexes, the registration numbers of all Canadian females (including those numbers beginning with 3 and 4) must begin with CANF.
