Programmed Breeding - Setting up

  • To set up the parameters to set up programmed breeding in VAMPP

We recommend that you consult your veterinarian on setting up your personal herd parameters.

In this example we have

  • Prostaglandin for cleanout/and to get cycling -  a minimum of 30 days after calving
  • 2nd prostaglandin for cleanout/and to get cycling - a minimum of 14 days after first Routine PG for cleanout (48 days pp)
  • GNHR to setup breeding heat - a minimum of 63 days after calving
  • Prostaglandin to breed - a minimum of 70 days after calving
  • GNRH- 2 days after the prostaglandin to breed
  • Breed - 3 days after the prostaglandin to breed

Under the Activities: Action List: parameters set up your default waiting period:

  1. Default waiting period for cows (# days to 1st service) 70
  2. Default waiting period for heifers (# days to 1st service) 70

Under the Activities: Programmed breeding:  parameters set up the parameters for you breeding program.  All parameters must be filled in BUT do not have to be included in the lists selected for the breeding program.

  1. Last date scheduled prostaglandin injections were given.   This is the day of the week that you would like to give injections on and subsequently breed.  For example, if you want injections to be given on Mondays to breed on Thursdays of every other week, set your Last date to be 13-3-2006 (13 March 06) or 6-3-2006 (6 March 2006) depending on which 14 day cycle you want to work with
  2. # of Days pp to give prostaglandin on abnormal calvers:   30 - days
    • animals that have a fertility finding such as Retained Placenta will appear on the list once they are 30 days pp
    • animals that have an abnormal calving will appear on the list once they are 30 days pp
    • - this value can be as low as 10 days
  3. # of days pp to give 1st prostaglandin injection for cleanout:  30 - days
    • animals will appear on the list for Routine Pg (RPG) once they are 30 days pp
    • Animals that have a heat date recorded within 7 days of the required Routine prostaglandin injection will not appear on the list
    • Animals that have a prostaglandin injection recorded within 7 days of the required Routine pg injection will not appear on the list
  4. Interval between routine prostaglandin injections pre breeding:  14 - days
    • Identify the interval in number of days after the first recorded Routine prostaglandin injection for the animal to appear on the list for their 2nd Routine prostaglandin for cleanout and set up for cycling.
  5. Give GNRH XX days prior to prostaglandin for breeding :  7 - days
    • animals will appear on the list for GnRH prior to breeding for all animals that are not yet bred
    • animals will not appear on this list if they have a recorded treatment of prostaglandin within 7 days of this day.
    • animals will appear on this list if their days in milk is greater than their voluntary waiting period minus the value in this field.  For example, on Monday, March 21, 2006 an animal is 62 days in milk, the herd parameter for GnRH prior to breeding is 7, this animal's VWP is 70 days(70-7 is 63 days) SO she will not appear on the list for GnRH prior to breeding until the next cycle.  If this animals was 63 days in milk on March 21, 2006, she would appear on the list.
  6. # days pp to give 1st scheduled prostaglandin for breeding if Voluntary Waiting Period is unknown:  70 - days
    • the voluntary waiting period is the days after calving that you want an animal to go into the breeding program.  Once the animal reaches the voluntary waiting period, she will appear on the list as PG to breed.
    • voluntary waiting periods are activated under File: Properties: Activate herd Options
    • if the voluntary waiting period is activated, a default waiting period for heifers and cows can be entered under Activities: Action List: parameters
    • when entering a calving date, the user can define a different waiting period for a specific animal.
    • animals that do not have a voluntary waiting period defined, will default to the voluntary waiting period defined in this field.
    • Animals that have a heat date recorded within 7 days of the required Scheduled prostaglandin injection for breeding will not appear on the list due for prostaglandin for Breeding
    • Animals that have a prostaglandin injection recorded within 7 days of the required Scheduled prostaglandin injection for breeding will not appear on the list due for prostaglandin for Breeding
  7. Give GNRH XX days after last PG for breeding:  2 - days
    • animals will appear on the list for GnRH after pg for breeding for all animals that are not yet bred
    • Animals that have a heat date recorded within 7 days of the required Scheduled prostaglandin injection for breeding will not appear on the list GnRH after prostaglandin for breeding
    • Animals that have a prostaglandin injection recorded within 7 days of the required Scheduled Pg injection for breeding will not appear on the list due for GnRH after pg for breeding
  8. Interval between Scheduled pg Injections for breeding: 14 - days
    •  Identify the interval in number for treatments to be administered for the scheduled prostaglandin injections for breeding.
    • for a 2 week cycle and to have treatments to be done every 2 weeks on the same day of the week, enter 14 days
  9. Days allowance to appear on SPG for breeding:  0 - days
    • Identify the window of grace - if an animal is x days prior to the voluntary waiting period, to include her on the list.
  10. Click box if you would like to Include animals in SPG list that are not coded RTB
    • If you want to exclude all animals that have not previously been coded as Ready to Breed, do NOT put a check mark in this box.

For a list of animals to appear on the Activities: Programmed breeding report for

  1. Select age of animals by clicking box beside Include Lactation 1+ animals and Include Lactation 0 animals (youngstock) if desired
  2. PG on 30+ days for cleanout-and cycling - place a check in the Due for routine PG pre-breeding
  3. 2nd PG on 48+ days for cleanout and cycling - place a check in the Due for 2nd routine PG pre-breeding
  4. GNRH on 63+ days  - place a check in the Due for GNRH prior to schedule PG
  5. PG on day 70+ days - place a check in the Due for scheduled PG for service
  6. GNRH on Pg date +2 - place a check in the Due for GNRH at time of breeding

It is important to record the breeding program events properly in VAMPP for the program to work for you.

Then when recording the events - enter the data under Entries: Fertility Status

  1. PG given on 30+ days pp for routine PG cleanout and cycling
    • enter repro finding as RPG (routine PG for cleaning) on date of treatment and enter the treatment Estrumate or Lutalyse or Prostaglandin on date of treatment
  2. 2nd PG given on 48+ days pp for 2nd routine PG cleanout and cycling
    • enter repro finding as RPG (routine PG for cleaning) on date of treatment and enter the treatment Estrumate or Lutalyse or Prostaglandin on date of treatment
  3. GNRH/Pg /GnRH for breeding
    • enter repro finding on date the animal enters the breeding program
      • enter the diagonsis as SPG (schedule PG for breeding) if not derivative of herd health visits.
      • if entered off of herd health visits, the diagnosis can be entered as Normal Ov-sync program
      • animals that were on the vetcheck list due for preg check and were found NOT pregnant have a diagnosis of Not pregnant - ov synch program - and this will cause the animal to come back into the programmed breeding.
    • enter the treatment for the first GNRH and include the date it is to be given
    • enter the treatment of prostaglandin and include the date it is to be given (GNRH date + 7 days)
    • enter the treatment of releasing hormone post pg and include the date it is to be given (GNRH date + 9 days)
    • enter the days to next heat as 7 days
      • NOTE:  In the scenario that an animal is entered into the ov-synch program on a date dd/mm/yyyy and requires a injection of prostaglandin 7 days later BUT has a breeding recorded after the recorded finding and before the due date for prostaglandin, SHE WILL NOT APPEAR ON THE DUE FOR PROSTAGLANDIN LIST but she will appear on the due for GnRH list.  In future updates, these options will be enhanced so you can define if you want GnRH treatment due animals included or excluded.

This should give you a very good list of what you are looking for.

Please note that animals that have a recorded heat date within 7 days of the expected PG date will not appear on the Due for PG for Service list.
