Initializing Herd Manually

Installing VAMPP using Your Herd Data File

  1. Install the program as per the instructions as they prompt you on the screen.
  2. Then click on the VAMPP icon and go into VAMPP.
  3. Click on File: New to create your farm in VAMPP.
  4. Enter the herd name, address and location and save the screen.
  5. Then go into File: Open
  6. Type the down arrow button at the right side of Farm field and your herd name should appear.
  7. Highlight your farm name and click OK

This will now bring you into your herd in VAMPP.

Initializing your herd data:

1.     If your milking herd is grouped into different production groups, go to File: Properties: Preferences otherwise proceed to step 2.

    • Put a check mark in the Activate herd grouping option and click OK
    • Go to File: Properties: Herd codes
      • Highlight the tab Herd group
        1. Click the Add button
        2. Type in the name of the first herd group and identify the group as Not milking for the time being.
        3. Click OK
      • Repeat step 1-3 for each of the herd groups.

2.     To enter the ONLY current lactation information of your animals, go to Entries: Quick Identify (Sire and dam information can be entered at a later time under Entries: Identification.)
3.     For each animal, enter the following data

      • Number of animal <Tab>
      • Name of animal (must be unique but may be the same as the animal #. One suggestion is to enter the sire of the animal followed by the animal #) <Tab>
      • Birth date of animal <Tab>
      • Check off Estimated if birthdate is an estimate (Note: Birthdate of animal must be consistent with the lactation number of the animal) <Tab>
      • Current lactation number of animal <Tab>
      • Breed of animal <Tab> (Click on the button on the right of Breed to pull down a list of possible breeds.)
        (Type the first letter of the breed ie: H for Holstein to have the H breeds appear)
      • Enter the last calving date on record for the specified animal <Tab>.
      • Enter the sex of calf born on the last recorded calving date <Tab>
        (Click on the button on the right of Calf sex to pull down a list of possible sex.)
      • If the herd is grouped, select the herd group of the animal <Tab>
      • Enter the last service date on record for the specified animal, if none, just press <Tab>
      • Enter the name of the sire used on the last service date, if none, just press <Tab>
      • Add new sires to your Sire inventory by pressing the F5 key when the cursor is on the sire field.
        (Type the first letter of the Sire name ie: I for Inspiration to have the I sires to appear)
      • Place a check mark in the Pregnant box if the animal is pregnant <tab>
      • Enter the last heat date on record for the specified animal, this date must be prior to the last service date if the animal is pregnant. If not ,just press <Tab>
      • Enter the previous to last service date on record for the specified animal, if none, just press <Tab>
      • Enter the name of the sire used on the previous to last service date
        Add new sires to your Sire inventory by pressing the F5 key when the cursor is on the sire field.
        (Type the first letter of the Sire name ie: I for Inspiration to have the I sires to appear)
      • Record the dry off date of the animal if the animal is currently Dry. If she is not dry, just press <Tab>
      • Then click OK and the animal record is filed

4.     Make a printout of the report: Reports: Fertility: Animal Status, to verify the status of all lactating animals currently in the herd.

Edits made to data that was entered under Quick Identify are done as follows:

1.     Service dates can be edited and added under Entries: Service but please note Service dates must be entered in chronological order.

      • To edit an existing service date to change the sire,
        Enter the cow number to be entered/edited
        Press the Button with a blue arrow on it (beside the heat date field)
        A blue box appears on the right hand side.
        Highlight the date to be edited or deleted.
        To edit the data, change the data on the blue fields and save the data (press F9)
        To delete the event, press the third button on the tool bar - a black X

2.     New calving dates can be entered under Entries: Calving
3.     Veterinary findings are entered under Entries: Reproductive Findings:

      • Enter all animals that are pregnant under Confirmed Pregnant

4.     Adding in missing sire and dam information

      • Animals do not have their dam and sire information filed.
        Sire and dam information can be added under Entries: Identification.
      • Click on the Edit ID button to add sires and dams

Quick keys:
When entering data - F9 key will save data
When entering data - F8 key will exit screen without saving data
