Getting Started with cd and DHI Setup

In response to your request, we are pleased to forward you a copy of VAMPP Version 3.3.0. This cd contains a working copy of our single user program. You can install it on any computer with Windows ‘95 or newer. The program provides you 60 days to evaluate all its features. During this period you may contact us for support. During or after the 60 day period, you may request an activation code to continue working with the program and NO data will be lost.

If installation does not begin automatically after inserting the cd into the drive, Click on the Windows Start button. Choose the Run command. Type in D:\Setup.exe or select the setup icon in the browse box. Click on OK in the Run box. Follow the instructions shown on your screen. A message is displayed when Setup is complete.

Also, on the cd is a copy of your herd data file for VAMPP. Please insert the cd into the D:\ drive of your computer. If installation begins again click Cancel, Exit.

1. Go into VAMPP. Once the evaluation screen appears, click on Try VAMPP
2. You will then have the option to click on Restore Herd
3. Once the look in box appears, change the directory to D:\ and the file with your herd name will appear in the list
4. Click on the file and click Open
5. This will restore your herd data into VAMPP.
6. Once the restore is completed, click on Open Herd
7. Type the first letter of your herd name on the Select Farm screen and your herd name will appear.
8. Click OK
9. A message stating that backup has never been done for this farm will appear. Do you want to backup now? Click Yes
10. Select file for VAMPP farm backup screen will appear, make a copy of your file onto your C:\ drive. Click Save. VAMPP will automatically save and verify your backup file.
11. Click Ok when backup and verification is complete
12. Once VAMPP is open, run an integrity check of your herd data. Go to File: Utilities: Integrity check, be sure there are check marks by all the boxes, click OK
13. Your herd data in VAMPP will now be ready for you to work with!

Setting up your herd parameters:

1. To enter your Milk Shipper #, semen tank # and AI Unit Account Number, click on File, properties, farm profile. Enter account numbers in appropriate boxes. Click OK
2. To enter your Herd Codes, Technicians, Veterinarians, click on File, properties, herd codes. Click appropriate tab, add. When finished click Done.

To begin working with VAMPP, follow the instructions found below.

Print out your Animal Status report, go to Reports: Fertility: Animal Status you will be able to view the status of ALL lactating and/or non-lactating animals currently in your herd. (Press the 6th button on the report tool bar - the reset settings button to compress the columns of the report)

How to enter breeding information:

Based on the Animal Status report, service dates will need to be entered/edited. Go to Entries: Service/heat: Individual entry:
1. Type in the animal's number that needs to be edited and either press TAB on your keyboard or double click with your mouse on the correct animal
    a. To edit existing service records:
        i. click on the button with the blue arrow
       ii. A box with all entered service dates should appear blue with white text. 
      iii. Highlight the date that you want to have deleted/edited and double click it. 
     iv. The service event details will appear on the screen in blue
      v. Edit the data as required and press Save data by clicking on the save button (2nd icon from the left) or pressing the F9 key 
     vi. If this service date is to be deleted, press the black X (3rd button on the toolbar). Note: The service date will not be permitted to be deleted if there is a calving date recorded after that service date. The calving date must be deleted under Entries, calving.
   b. to enter new service data, enter the new date the animal was serviced
2. Enter the service sire that was used 
   a. If the sire is not in your herd data, type in the bull's name and press F5 on your keyboard
   b. A screen will appear that will allow you to enter the new service sire identification information.
   c. Fill in all the detail, EXCEPT for sire number – VAMPP will automatically assign the next available number 
   d. Click OK once completed
3. Enter in the Freeze date for the semen that was used for breeding – if it's a natural service type the word NATURAL in uppercase letters. If the freeze date is unavailable type NA in uppercase letters
4. Enter the number of Doses that was used
5. Enter the Heat status
6. If necessary enter any Hormones that were used
7. Once the data is complete, click F9 on your keyboard to save the information or click the save icon (2nd icon from the left hand side)

How to enter a calving date:

1. Based on the Animal Status report, there a number of cows that are overdue for calving. To enter a calving date, go to Entries, Calving
2. Type in the animal's number that needs a calving date entered and either press TAB on your keyboard or double click with your mouse on the correct number
3. Enter the date the animal calved
4. Enter the calf sex
4. If the calf died within 24hrs after calving, enter the calf's sex by perinatal death
5. Enter the calf size
6. Enter calving ease
7. If necessary, enter any special code and the dam's temperament
8. Once the data is complete, click F9 on your keyboard to save the information or click the save icon (2nd icon from the left hand side)
9. VAMPP will ask if you wish to create a Full record or record the calf's NLID # or have no record.
10. Choose the option that you desire

Note: You can have Registration numbers automatically assigned to the next calf by entering the series that have been given to you by your breed association. To do this go to Entries, calving, click on the Setup defaults for Reg Numbers (fourth icon from right). Also choose if you would like to create calf record automatically, be prompted at time of entry. If you want to keep records of male calves born click a dot in the appropriate fields.

How to enter Herd Health and reproductive findings:

1. Based on the Animal Status report, no animals are confirmed pregnant. To enter the pregnancy status and other herd health or reproductive findings, go to Entries, Fertility Status, individual or batch entry
2. Enter all animals that are confirmed pregnant, not pregnant or have other reproductive findings by choosing the correct animal(s)
3. Enter the date or approximate date for the animal(s) when a reproductive event needs to be entered
4. Enter the correct Diagnosis
   a. If you wish to add or remove diagnoses from the list currently in VAMPP, click the Add Diagnosis icon
   b. Once the screen appears you may add or remove the diagnosis' of your choice by simply highlighting the desired diagnosis and click add or remove
   c. The purple box is your list of Active Reproductive Findings
5. If the animal was treated, enter the Drug that was used and dosage, route, times per day, how many days treated and treatment date
   a. If you wish to add or remove drugs from the list currently in VAMPP, click the Treatment Cabinet icon 
   b. Once the screen appears you may add or remove the drugs of choice by simply highlighting the desired drug and click add or remove
   c. The purple box is your list of Active Reproductive Treatments
6. Once the data is complete, click F9 on your keyboard to save the information or click the save icon (2nd icon from the left hand side)

How to enter Dry-off dates:

1. Based on the Animal Status report, there are dry-off dates recorded in VAMPP.
2. Go to Entries, dry-off, individual or batch entry
3. Enter all the animals that are currently dry
4. Enter the date or approximate date the animal(s) were dried off
5. Click on the Treatment Cabinet icon to choose the drug(s) that you use to dry off your cows
   a. Highlight the drug(s) that you use, click add
   b. The purple box is your list of Active Dry-off Treatment 

6. Below the Treatment Cabinet icon, enter the treatments used at dry-off, dosage, route, times per day, how many days treated and treatment date
7. Once the data is complete, click F9 on your keyboard to save the information or click the save icon (1st icon from the left hand side)

How to enter cull or sell event:

1. Go to Entries, cull/sell
2. Type in the animal's number that needs to be culled or sold and either press TAB on your keyboard or double click with your mouse on the correct animal 3. Enter the cull/sell date
4. Enter the reason
5. Enter why or due to
6. Enter all other information that applies
7. Once the data is complete, click F9 on your keyboard to save the information or click the save icon (2nd icon from the left hand side)

Some of the milking animals do not have their dam and sire information filed.

1. This can be added under Entries: Identification.
2. Click on the Edit ID button to add sires and dams

Note: If the sire and/or dam are not in your database you will have to create a record for each of them. Sires can be entered on the fly by pressing the F5 key on your keyboard when you are in the Sire field box. For dams, this is done under File, identification, new

There will be some heifers (lactation 0) that are not in VAMPP.

1. Print an inventory report Reports: Inventory: Current Inventory, include all animals.
2. Animals not shown are then entered under Entries, identification, new

Note some sires and dams do not have their complete identification information.

1. Entering or editing registration numbers, names and registered names of both sires and dams.
2. This is done under Entries: Animal Records: Id change.

Quick keys for in VAMPP to enter data:

F9 key to save data
F8 key to exit screen without saving data
F7 key to save data and go to next animal
F2 key to clear screen and begin again with entry
Alt E to edit an existing record
